Gilroy Elks Lodge honored at national convention

​​Exalted Ruler Angela Moore attended the 158th National Grand Lodge Convention of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) that was held July 1-4 in Minneapolis, Minn. as a representative from Gilroy Lodge #1567. 

Competing with a select group of 60 Lodges from more than 1,800 across the country, Gilroy Lodge #1567 was named an All-American Elks Lodge in the USA.

As Lodge representative to the conference, the presenters asked Moore up to the podium to the presentation of the certificate which she accepted on behalf of the members of Gilroy Lodge.

More than 5,800 Elks who were also attending the conference witnessed the presentation.

Party in the Park returns

The annual Party in the Park, organized by the City of Gilroy and the South County Youth Task Force, returns to San Ysidro Park, 7700 Murray Ave., on July 22 from 5-8pm.

The free event will feature raffles, entertainment, interactive lawn activities for the family, community resources, music and more.

Youth Alliance hosts inaugural event to celebrate native cultures

The public is invited to join Youth Alliance for the Hollister Native American Gathering on July 15 from 10am-7pm at the Hollister High School Football Stadium, 1220 Monterey St.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in various activities and experiences that showcase indigenous culture, art and dance. Kanyon “Coyote Woman” Sayers-Roods and Valentin Lopez, chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, will be the event’s special guest speakers leading the opening ceremony.

The event will feature indigenous arts, crafts, drumming circles with youth, dance groups, food vendors, informational booths and music.

The Squeeze benefits Rebekah Children’s Services

The Squeeze, a concert benefiting Rebekah Children’s Services, returns July 22 from 5-10pm at Fortino Winery, 4525 Hecker Pass Highway in Gilroy.

Journey Unauthorized and The Boys of Summer will perform during the event, which will also feature beer and wine available for purchase.

Gilroyan graduates from University of Tampa

McKenzie Capozza of Gilroy graduated from The University of Tampa in May.

Capozza received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Capozza also earned Dean’s List honors for the Spring 2023 semester. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.75 or higher to be eligible for the dean’s list.

The University of Tampa is a private university located in Florida.

Local student recognized at Emerson College

Cade Mallett of Gilroy earned Dean’s List honors for the Spring 2023 semester at Emerson College.

Mallett is majoring in Business Creative Enterprises and is a member of Emerson College’s Class of 2026.

The requirement to make Dean’s List is a grade point average of 3.7 or higher for that semester.

Emerson College is based in Boston, Mass.
