Local Scene: National Night Out; foundation grants open

National Night Out returns

The Gilroy Police Department and City of Gilroy will present National Night Out on Oct. 4 from 4-7:30pm at 350 West Sixth St., between City Hall and the Gilroy Library.

The public is invited to get to know their local police officers and participate in games, raffles, a resource fair and more.

Gilroy Foundation’s grant cycle opens Oct. 1

The Gilroy Foundation’s grant cycle opens Oct. 1 for funding in 2023.

Since 1980, Gilroy Foundation has awarded more than $16.3 million in grants and scholarships. To date, in 2022, $439,829 was awarded to local organizations and programs during the annual grant cycle and through pass-through grants.

All nonprofits with a 501(c)(3) status, Gilroy Unified School District schools, and Gilroy City programs are eligible to apply for a Gilroy Foundation grant that will serve the Gilroy community.

The 2023 Competitive Grant Cycle opens on Oct. 1 and closes on Dec. 15. To apply, download a 2023 grant application, available at gilroyfoundation.org.

LJB Farms preps pumpkin patches

LJB Farms, 585 Fitzgerald Ave. in San Martin, will host its second annual Pumpkin Boo-tique on Oct. 1 and 2 from 9am to 4pm to celebrate the grand opening of its pumpkin patch.

The event will feature 20 artisans as well as live music.

In addition, LJB Farms is hosting two other pumpkin patches: at the corner of East Main Avenue and Condit Road in Morgan Hill, and at Battaglia Ranch, 13580 Murphy Road in San Martin.

Artists invited to draw with chalk downtown

M.A.N.O.S. will present the Gilroy Chalk Festival on Oct. 8 from 10am to 5pm on Monterey Street between Fifth and Sixth streets.

The event, free to the public, will feature a chalk art contest, food and entertainment, vendors and a kid chalk zone.

Artists of all ages will be able to draw their artwork using chalk on Monterey Street in Downtown Gilroy.

Book sale returns Oct. 8

The Friends of Gilroy Library holds a book sale every second Saturday of the month from 10am-1pm at the library, 350 West Sixth St.

The next sale is Oct. 8.

Books will be $5 per bag for members and $8 a bag for non-members.

The Isabel Jewell Bookstore is open Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 1-3pm, Wednesday from 1-4pm, Thursday from 10am to 3pm and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 10am to 1pm.

South Valley Symphony prepares for season-opener

South Valley Symphony will open its 49th season on Oct. 9 with a concert of music entirely by American composers.

Maestro Anthony Quartuccio will lead the orchestra in a “Made in America!” program that will open with the National Anthem and include Morton Gould’s “American Salute,” music from Aaron Copland’s “Our Town,” Leonard Bernstein’s Suite from “West Side Story,” “A Festival Prelude” by Alfred Reed, “Behind Me Dips Eternity” by Henry Mollicone, selections from “The Force Awakens” by John Williams, and a salute to TV and cinema arranger Carl Strommen.

The concert will begin at 3pm under the large tent at Guglielmo Winery, 1480 East Main Ave. in Morgan Hill.

Tickets are $40 for adults, which includes a coupon for a glass of wine, free for students with ID and children. Tickets must be purchased in advance at southvalleysymphony.org.
