Toyota’s recall of cars with “sticking accelerators pedals” may still be making national headlines, but the owner of Gilroy’s local Toyota dealership said the issue is under control locally.
Frank Bolea, owner and general manager of Gilroy Toyota, said the dealership installed new accelerator pedals on about 60 new cars on Tuesday, and he hired about five workers to help with the effort.
“It’s like an assembly line,” he said. “(Customers) have been in and out in a short period of time.”
The dealership has offered more refreshments than usual this week, such as sandwiches, he said.
The dealership also has offered special deals in conjunction with the recall, such as zero-percent financing on Corollas and Camrys, he said.
Toyota Motor Sales announced Jan. 21 that it would recall about 2.3 million vehicles to correct sticking accelerator pedals on specific Toyota models. The action is separate from the ongoing recall of nearly 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles to reduce the risk of pedal entrapment by incorrect or out of place floor mats.
Anyone who needs to have parts replaced can call Gilroy Toyota at 848-8000 and bring in their cars at any point, Bolea said.
“They won’t be tied up all day,” he said. “We’ve got people standing around.”
