It’s been an interesting week for Gilroy crime. Besides the usual business of robberies, burglaries and assaults, police responded to a handful of incidents including a man roaming around Gilroy exposing himself to women, and reports of the levee on Lewis Street being set on fire. Here are a few of those events:
Man exposes himself to women on four reported occasions
On four separate occasions last week, a male suspect exposed himself to women all around Gilroy. In the Mi Pueblo parking lot on First Street at 8:40 p.m. on Sept. 17, a suspect asked a female for directions while in his black SUV. The female approached the vehicle and began giving directions when she noticed the man was masturbating. The man fled in his vehicle. At 8:45, a suspect exposed himself to a woman from his vehicle on Broadway Street. At 9 p.m., another female reported a man asked her for directions from his black SUV while masturbating in the Quality Inn Motel parking lot on Murray Avenue. At 9:40 p.m. the next day, a suspect allegedly got out of his black SUV on Monterey Street and Welburn Avenue and asked for directions while exposed.
Arson at the levee
An unknown suspect lit the grass on fire near the levee on Lewis Street at 2:54 p.m. on Sept. 17. The only damage was a patch of burnt grass, and the suspect is outstanding. A bit more than an hour later, another suspect attempted to set the levee on fire. At 8:45 p.m., the levee was lit on fire for a third time by an unknown suspect. Gilroy Police and Gilroy Fire departments could not be reached for details before press time.
Guns and cash stolen from household
An unknown suspect kicked in the side garage door to a residence on Third Street around 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 19 and ransacked the home, stealing five guns valued at more at $3000 total, a laptop, gaming systems, an e-reader and $15,000 in cash hidden in a book.
Shooting on Alexander Street
At 4:36 p.m. on Sept. 20, an unknown suspect fired two rounds at an unknown victim in the area of Old Gilroy Street and Alexander Street. The victim and the suspect were not located by police.
Man threatened with gun
A man was threatened with a gun on the 8100 block of Westwood Drive at 10:55 p.m. on Sept. 20 (not to be confused with the attempted murder on Westwood Drive on Sept. 17). The victim was approached by a man in a blue Buick who pointed a gun at him before fleeing. Police later located the suspect and have identified him as 20-year-old David Torres. Torres was taken to Santa Clara County Jail.
