GILROY – An 18-year-old Gilroy man is being charged with attempted murder in connection with shootings on Dec. 28.

Police arrested Isreal Enrique Hernandez in front of his 8170 Church St. home at 3:20 p.m. New Year’s Eve. In addition to attempted murder, he faces a felony charge of willfully firing a gun at an inhabited house, occupied building or occupied vehicle.

“It is a gang-related incident, and we’ve identified a number of suspects,” said Gilroy police Sgt. Greg Flippo with the police department’s Anti-Crime Team. Flippo did not elaborate further on the ongoing investigation.

If found guilty of attempted murder, Hernandez faces a maximum penalty of life in prison with the possibility of parole. The other charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.

As of this morning, Hernandez was still in county jail in San Jose on $250,000 bail.

One man received a minor gunshot wound in his arm that day. He was a 26-year-old Gilroyan who originally told police the bullet wound in his arm came from a car driving by the Platinum Theatres on Monterey Street, where he was standing. After further questioning, police determined this story was false, but they did not arrest the man, who was a patient at Saint Louise Regional Hospital at the time.

Bullets hit two houses on the 7800 block of Church Street earlier Dec. 28, but police said it appeared one or more shooters were firing from one car into another, not aiming at the homes. Police also received a report of shots fired between two vehicles on southbound U.S. 101 near the Monterey Street exit.
