GILROY – Anchorpoint Christian didn’t need a whole game to show Marina didn’t belong on the same field, as the visitors forfeited the contest halfway through the third quarter to give the host Warriors a 58-8 victory Saturday night in Gilroy.

Anchorpoint improved to 6-1 on the season with the win, while Marina dropped to 2-3.

The contest was called after a Marina player was ejected for taking a cheap shot on freshman receiver Marcus Harrell. Referees spotted the ball on the 2-yard line after assessing a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, but Marina’s players then began to walk off the field, signaling they were through playing.

“It was strange,” Anchorpoint coach K.C. Adams said. “The problem is … we’re playing a team that’s not as good as us, and all of a sudden – [we] can’t stop scoring.”

The Rules of 8-man football say a team can forfeit a game if down by more than 45 points.

After giving up a touchdown and two-point conversion to begin the game, the Warriors rolled off 22 points in each of the first two quarters. Anchorpoint then added 14 more in the third.

Christian McCrimmon led Anchorpoint with 100 yards rushing on 10 carries for three touchdowns. He also had a touchdown reception and an interception return for a score.

“Christian, right now, is one of the hottest kids in the state touching the ball,” Adams said. “Our whole offense is really running well.”

Quarterback Josh Ignani was 5-of-11 for 131 yards and threw two touchdowns, one of which went to Colton Minyard on a 13-yard score.

The defense also made plenty of plays, with Joseph Apolinar recording two sacks and Brian Orr snagging two interceptions.

“Our defense played really, really well,” Adams said. “We’re playing against a lot of teams that are trying to platoon players against us, and it’s not working.”

While bad blood was brewing when the game ended, Adams said everyone came together and made their peace. “We all left on a good note,” he said.

The disparity in points is what caused the dispute. Marina felt like Anchorpoint was running up the score, something several opponents of Gilroy High football have said following games.

While Adams said there was no intention to rub the score in the other team’s face, he didn’t make apologies.

“We are a very competitive team and I don’t have a second string to slow it down,” he said, noting he only has a 14-man roster. “And I dont like playing slow. Someone could get hurt.”

Anchorpoint will now look toward a tough game the day after Halloween, Saturday, at North County Christian (5-1), which is located in Atascadero.

“That is our biggest game by far,” Adams said.
