Mindy Marquez has a knack for discovering her own talents.

After playing volleyball for several years, she decided to try her hand at tennis. This season, she was Gilroy High’s third-best singles player and, with teammate Catherine Wilson, became the league’s number two doubles team.

The driven student was a class officer for three years at GHS and edited the senior section of this year’s yearbook.

Starting this fall, Marquez will study business at Saint Mary’s College in Southern California with the hopes of some day owning her own business – possibly here in Gilroy – or working with a successful company as an executive assistant. Or both.

She has found a role model and an inspiration in her boss and best friend’s aunt, Michelle Martinez, owner of Got Memories?, a scrapbooking supplies store on Monterey Street.

“She’s just someone that I look up to because that’s what I want to be,” Marquez said. “I love just working with people and having to organize things.”

An only child, Marquez looks forward to having time to herself while spending four years at a campus with fewer students even than GHS.

“Small is good, there’s more attention to the students.”
