Check one. The first-place Christopher High girls varsity basketball team set aside Monterey High 67-31 in Monterey Bay league action Monday night, setting the stage for arguably the biggest game in program history Wednesday night, as it chases down a league title.
CHS hosts Monte Vista Christian – the only team to defeat the Cougars in league this season – and the scenario is simple: If the Cougars (16-5 overall, 9-1 MBL) win, they place a bow on the league championship. A victory on Friday at Watsonville would tighten the knot, permanently. However, if MVC (15-5, 8-2) prevails, three teams, including Seaside (11-10, 8-2) would have two losses in league and deadlocked for the crown. MVC’s two defeats came to Seaside, which lost twice to Christopher. The Mustangs beat the Cougars 55-50 in overtime in the teams’ last get together.
Meanwhile, on Monday night, Hanna Tabron led all scorers with 21 points followed by Olivia Tabron’s 14 points. Merrett Brown chipped in 11 points, Maddie Peterson and Cydney Caradonna each had five and Haylee Peterson and Dejah Raoof four.
Game time for Wednesday night is set for 7 p.m.
The junior varsity team also won Monday, 44-9.
BOYS SOCCER
The Gilroy High boys soccer team began a crucial five-game stretch to gain a spot in the postseason with a 2-0 victory at Palma on Monday.
The Mustangs (6-9-1 overall, 3-4-1 Tri-County Athletic League) sit smack-dab among a clogged stadings column with two other teams that haventhree league wins and at least three losses. Alisal has separated itself and looks in cruise control at 9-0 toward the TCAL title.
GHS truly does control its own destiny and faces another must-not-lose against San Benito at home at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The Mustangs and Balers tied 1-1 on Jan. 19.
Andres Jimenez had one goal for the Mustangs, who scored twice in the first half on Monday. Jonathan Diaz De Leon tallied goal No. 16 this season.
