Watsonville – What homecourt advantage?

The Gilroy junior varsity boys’ basketball reversed a loss in the final of the Mustang Classic by defeating Aptos 53-48 Saturday to win the Watsonville Tournament.

With Kendrick Azcueta and Jamie Jensen hitting key three-point baskets, the Mustangs prevailed against the Mariners, who had beaten them 52-48 in the GHS tourney final. Ryan Costa led four double-figure scorers for Gilroy (12-3) with 12 points. Azcueta and Justin Wheat had 11 points each, and Jensen added 10.

The other three games won by the Mustangs were blowouts. In the semifinals, Wheat and Stephen Galtman combined for 35 points and 20 rebounds as Gilroy whipped Salinas 70-51. Costa’s 12 points led the Mustangs past North Monterey County 54-20 and Wheat’s 10 points led 13 different players who scored in a 56-21 victory over Watsonville.

It was Gilroy’s second tournament win this season. The Mustangs open Tri-County Athletic League play at 5:30pm today at home against Palma.
