GILROY – Gilroy boys’ tennis team bounced back from several straight defeats to beat Alvarez 6-1 Thursday.
“Finally,” said Mustangs coach John Langer. “We get everyone out to a match and we do what I’ve known we could do all season.” The GHS roster has been limited much of the season by injuries and illness.
Vinh Vong, Gilroy’s No. 1, set the tone for the singles matches by defeating PJ Vargas 6-1, 7-5. The Mustangs three other singles – Matt Chan (No. 2), Oliver Drewry (3) and Ryan Azad (4) – all won their matches as well.
“Vinh and Matt and Ryan really controlled their matches in singles, and Oliver continued to grind it out to sweep the singles,” Langer said.
Gilroy’s No. 1 pairing of Mitch Souza and Andrew Costa suffered a rare defeat on the doubles side, while Zach Singh and Jared Besson (No. 2) and No. 3 doubles partners Kevin Lee and Joseph Leong were able to win their matches.
“Zach and Jared really work well together and Joseph and Kevin are without a doubt the best No. 3 doubles team in the league,” Langer said.
Gilroy will return to action Tuesday when it plays at San Benito.
