Gilroy played Valley Christian on even terms for the first half before succumbing to the Warriors’ swarming defensive pressure and dropping a 36-24 decision in the Archbishop Mitty New Year’s Classic.
The Mustangs (7-3) face Sequoia in the seventh place game at 1pm today.
Dana Schoeneman and Laura Spellman carried GHS offensively with 11 and nine points, respectively. In fact, they were the two leading scorers in the game.
Valley Christian (10-2) had five girls with six or more points, led by Torey Walker’s seven, and used a 16-5 third quarter to pull away from Gilroy.
“They were small but they used a lot of swarming pressure,” GHS assistant coach Ana Patejdl said. “In the first quarter we struggled breaking their press until the girls realized they needed to pass through it.”
Defense has been Gilroy’s forte this season and it was again Thursday as they held the Warriors to four points in each of the second and fourth quarters.
But other than Schoeneman and Spellman, who had her high-point game of the season, the rest of the team combined for four points.
