Beware of scams
Homeowners should beware of loan modification scams, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
“Foreclosure rescue companies” claim they can help save struggling families’ homes but many often request hefty fees in advance – a tell-tale sign of a foreclosure rip-off – according the FTC. Some scams use names, phone numbers and Web sites that make it look like they’re part of the government. To avoid a scam, those seeking financial counseling should only use phone numbers listed on government agency Web sites. Don’t click on links or open any attachments in unexpected e-mails.

Special meeting on raises postponed
At the request of two city council members, Mayor Al Pinheiro agreed Friday to reschedule a special meeting Monday to consider alternate attorney services and to vote on raises for the city administrator and clerk.
Councilman Perry Woodward originally broached the idea of exploring different counseling arrangements, and the mayor parlayed that study session – scheduled for tonight – into a special meeting so the council could also vote on raises for City Administrator Tom Haglund City Clerk Shawna Freels. The study session will occur in the near future, and the council will likely vote on the raises at its next regular meeting Oct. 5, Freels said.
