GILROY—The Gilroy City Council has begun discussions on revising what types of land uses are allowed downtown, and those talks could result in relocating used car dealerships to the Auto Mall at 10th and Chestnut streets.

The Gilroy City Council voted 5-1 and approved controversial water and sewer rate hikes for residents Monday, despite calls from more than a dozen opponents who suggested elected officials hold off on voting for at least a month to allow for more notification of residents by mail—especially those who speak Spanish.

Despite the injection of more than $35,000 in the coffers of the campaign in favor of Measure F—mainly from developers and car dealers—Gilroy voters spoke and the half-cent sales tax increase fell short by more than 550 votes, based on unofficial semi-final results from the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.
