A county report says Gilroy police take the longest to respond to emergencies of any city in the area—but police and city officials say it’s likely that the report is wrong, even though the department is working to improve its slow response times.

The city has embarked on a multi-million-dollar capital improvement project in downtown Gilroy, but some business owners say it’s costing them money, too.The proprietors of the Milias Restaurant and Hotel estimate they lost thousands of dollars in potential revenue between Dec. 1 and 5 after a weeklong construction project drove away customers during what’s traditionally the busiest month in the restaurant business.

City Council declared a single-story home on Cypress Court a public nuisance Aug. 4 due to mounting trash around the property, and soon, it will be cleaned up at the property owner’s expense. The council voted unanimously to solicit bids to clean up the refuse at 1221 Cypress Court at the Sept. 8 meeting.

Inclement Weather Episode Declared for the Entire Santa Clara County

Upgrading the city’s aging IT infrastructure and keeping Gilroy on sound fiscal footing in the face of growing budget pressures were two of city council’s top stated priorities for the next two-to-three years, as discussed on Saturday during the council’s annual goal-setting retreat.

Mayor and US Navy veteran, Perry Woodward, is presented with the first poppy of the annual poppy appeal fundraiser held by the American Legion Auxiliary Gilroy Unit 217 during the month of May, by poppy chairwoman, Maryann Collom on Tuesday. The month-long appeal is in support of local veterans, with money going to provide things such as clothing, meals, and transportation to doctor's appointments. The poppy became a symbol of remembrance to honor fallen soldiers after World War One. Volunteers will be collecting donations in May at venues throughout the city. An enchilada dinner with rice, beans, salad and dessert will be served on Saturday, April 30, starting at 6 p.m. at American Legion Gilroy Post #217, 74 W 6th St, Gilroy. Tickets $10.
