On the front line of Santa Clara County Vector Control District's fight against mosquitoes is Bob Kaufman. Kaufman, 52, the Vector Control Field Operations Supervisor sets out, armed with a scooper, a long pole with a cup on the end, hunting through stagnant streams, abandoned tires and murky swimming pools. The quarry of his hunt, mosquito larvae and after a few hours on the prowl, he's found his prey inside an old abandoned truck tire on Santa Teresa Boulevard.

Roger and Kathy Santos live on a property on the east side of Gilroy that has been in the family since 1930. Now there is a distinct possibility that their property will be on a collision course with the incoming high-speed rail line.

Police know about protecting and serving, but for the past two weeks, they have added a new duty— shopping.

The City of Gilroy has announced the following, in the wake of a heavy rain forecast: 

Four City Council members have saved the swimming recreation day for hundreds of children and families on the east side by voting to repair the South Valley Middle School swimming pool and keep recreation opportunities afloat. Community advocate Shawn Weymouth also floated a fabulous idea: name the pool after the late longtime city recreation department employee, coach and Gilroy community volunteer, John Garcia. Just thinking about the idea makes me smile, as I’m sure it does John. His family would be duly honored. Love the idea.

City of Gilroy officials are in the thick of the process to find and hire a new police chief, with Pedro Espinoza set to retire as of May 22.  The city is working with a nationwide search firm to recruit a new police chief. So...
