Measure A asks voters to increase county sales tax
An eighth-cent sales tax increase would make Santa Clara County a more expensive place to shop if voters OK a proposed tax hike on the Nov. 6 ballot. But it’s also the only way the county would get funds directly from local sales tax revenue, which currently goes straight to state coffers.

La Vern Peipelman, 76, formerly of Morgan Hill, died peacefully in her sleep, early Monday morning. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends at her home in Augusta, KS.
Police seeking two suspects in late-night robbery
Police are looking for two suspects who robbed the Ramada Inn at gunpoint and fled in a red vehicle believed to be a Honda, authorities said.
Community shows support for family of murdered Hollister woman
Community members continued to rally around the Carroll family after the arrest of suspect David Quiroz Saturday who was arrested on murder charges in the disappearance of Heather Carroll, 25. An impromptu vigil was held at Dunne Park on Saturday and local residents have a fundraiser planned for Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Target parking lot on Airline Highway. The Wednesday event includes a bake sale and gift basket fundraiser that will benefit the Carroll family.
Suspect has jail history, but no violent offenses locally
The suspect in the homicide of 25-year-old Hollister woman Heather Carroll has been convicted on three drunken driving-related charges in San Benito County and served time for other cases of driving without a license, but does not appear to have a local history of convictions for violent offenses, according to court records.

Preceded in death by his parents, Gregorio and Maria Mirelez; son, Joey Mirelez and daughter Rachel Lozano; brother, Richard Mirelez and sister, Ellie Perez. Survived by his wife, Maria Luisa Mirelez; children, Annie (Sal) Tomasello, Fernando Mirelez and Gloria (Frank) Guiterrez; step-son, Emilio (Cathy) Martinez; son-in-law, Daniel Lozano and daughter-in-law, Lola Rodriguez; grandchildren, Mark Tomasello, Melissa (Chip) Beardsley, Danny (Michelle) Lozano, Monique Lozano (Eric ), Fernando, Jr. (Mia) Mirelez, Cynthia Mirelez (Justin), Cristina Pinto, Selina (Pete) Salazar, Gorette (Anthony) Perez; Hugh and Morgan Martinez; great-grandchildren, Andrea, Zachary, Jacob, Jenna, Dominic, Roman, Daniel III (Baba), Hailey, Tanisha, Brianna, Amber and Isaiah. Also survived by his brother, Ernesto (Miriam) Mirelez and sisters, Lilly (John) Valdez and Esita (Santos) Montez. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
