Lillian Marie Hill February 2, 1934 – October 2, 2012

Lillian M. Hill passed Tuesday October 2, 2012 after a lengthy battle with COPD and lung cancer. She was known to her friends as Lill, and those who fondly thought of her as mom and grandma also had a special place in her heart.

Man with long criminal history arrested on five warrants

It’s been a mostly quiet week as far as arrests and reported incidents in Gilroy - but with the arrest of one of Gilroy’s most prolific career criminals last weekend, one less wanted man is off the streets. Here are a couple events:

Alleged landscape scammer’s plea continued

The plea hearing for the man who allegedly charmed multiple South County seniors into giving him money for landscaping services he never completed was continued to Nov. 1, due to the public defender declaring a conflict in the case.

Daniel Paul Hanten December 28, 1949 – September 26, 2012

Daniel Paul Hanten, born on December 28, 1949, in Camp Belvoir, VA, passed away at his home in Gilroy, CA on September 26, 2012, of natural causes. Daniel is survived by his daughters, Erin Hanten of Gilroy and Kimberly Wilson of Hollister, his sister Rosemary Hanten of Reno, NV, and his grandchildren, Destiny Martinez and Noah Jacksich.

Lauren June Geiger May 29, 1989 – September 30, 2012

A very special soul was welcomed into Heaven on September 30, 2012. Lauren June Geiger, 23, passed away in Pennsylvania from a tragic ATV accident, but at the time, she was enjoying life as she always had.

Michael E. Vickroy March 15, 1951 – September 30, 2012

Mike Vickroy, 61, died September 30, 2012, at his home in Gilroy. He was born March 15, 1951, in Gilroy and was the son of Betty Vickroy the late Henry Vickroy.

Wineries readying for Passport Weekend on Saturday, Sunday

South County wineries are hosting the second Passport Weekend of the year Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cynthia Ann (Cindi) Bono April 13, 1957 – September 30, 2012

Cindi passed away on sunday morning of complications from lung cancer diagnosed earlier this year.

Meet the city’s new youth commission members

Gilroy's youth commission is an 11-member board of teens of all ages to serve as an advisory group to City Council for issues that affect young people in Gilroy. They also work on volunteer project throughout the year. During Council's Oct. 1 meeting, Council members appointed who would fill the six vacant spots on the commission. Of the 11 applications received, here are the teens they chose:
