Elvira M. Hernandez, preceded in death by her husband, Faustino R. Hernandez, who passed away in 2007. Known to her family as "MAMA", she passed into the Lord's arms at her home on Monday afternoon, surrounded by her loving family. Elvira was born in Aldama, Guanajuato, Mexico. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her children; Ignacio Faustino (Daisy) Hernandez, Rose (Alex) Hernandez, Cesareo Hernandez, Carmen Hernandez and Beatriz "Bette" Hernandez. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one sister. Elvira worked at Gentry's for approximately 25 years. She was the happiest during family gatherings and she loved to cook for her family. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting and sewing. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. A visitation will take place on Monday, March 17, 2008 from 5:00-8:00 P.M. with a vigil service to commence at 7:00 P.M., both at Johnson Funeral Home, 17720 Monterey Street in Morgan Hill. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Catherine Parish, 17400 Peak Avenue in Morgan Hill. Interment to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Gilroy Foundation distributes close to $350K in scholarship money to local grads
The Gilroy Foundation, a local philanthropic nonprofit organization, gave out $343,450 in scholarships this year to 53 Gilroy and Morgan Hill graduates. The money came from 19 sources including garlic entrepreneuer Don Christopher, owner of Christopher Ranch; his wife, Karen; and sons Bill and Ken Christopher.
