Following an opening on their seven-person school board caused by Francisco Dominguez’s resignation, the Gilroy Unified School District is still awaiting the arrival of resumes.
In the meantime, at least one possible candidate is out.
“I just wanted to let you know that I will not be applying for the open BOE position,” wrote Sal Tomasello, a fixture in local schools for 39 years.
While he was considering throwing his hat in the ring, the former principal of Ascencion Solorsano Middle School decided “with only four months into retirement, now is not the time for me to make this move.”
But he isn’t shutting the door on forthcoming opportunities.
With four spots opening up during 2012 and 2014 elections, “there will be future opportunities for me to seek a position,” Tomasello wrote.
As of Monday, GUSD Board President Rhoda Bress confirmed no applications have been submitted to the Superintendent’s office.
The vacancy was left by Dominguez, the embattled former GUSD trustee and sole proprietor of a local consulting company who is facing two separate investigations into alleged embezzlement and grand theft by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Dominguez submitted his official letter of resignation Nov. 9.
Board bylaws mandate that a replacement be secured no later than Jan. 9 – exactly 60 days from when the seat was vacated.
Although Dominguez’s four-year term would have lasted until 2014, the temporary appointee will hold office until the November 2012 elections, at which point he or she may run for the position.
