GILROY – Responding to a noise complaint at a hotel, city police arrested a man who they said had 10 fake California driver’s licenses, stolen checks, stolen IDs, drug paraphernalia and “numerous other fraud-related items.”

Police arrested Cliff Eugene Schonert, 51, at 8:30 a.m. Friday on suspicion of forgery and false impersonation, both felonies.

He was also booked on two outstanding warrants: One for petty theft and trespassing and the other for driving with a suspended license and having outdated license plate tags.

Police found Schonert in a room he rented at the Comfort Inn on Murray Avenue after responding to a report of a verbal argument there.

They first arrested him on the warrants. Then, in searching the room, they found the materials they said were counterfeit and/or stolen.

Schonert has a 346 E. Tenth St. address but was staying at the hotel at the time.

Police said it is not uncommon for a person conducting criminal activity to do so from a hotel room, so as to distance the activity from his or her home.
