Nunzio Scarcella passed away at home in Gilroy on Sept. 24, 2003.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Carmela Villante Scarcella, of Gilroy. Mr. Scarcella is survived by his three children: son, James and wife Nancy Scarcella, of Gilroy, daughter, Mary and husband Ron Smetek, of Fairfax, Va., daughter, Christine and husband Randy Pace, of Bethalto, Ill.; nine grandchildren: Michael and wife Angela Scarcella, of Hollister, Matthew and wife, Melissa Scarcella, of Gilroy, Angela and husband, Danny Phillips, of Morgan Hill, Ron and wife Jennifer Smetek, of Springfield, Va., Tim and wife, Rhonda Smetek, of Fredricksburg, Va., Tammy and husband, Mark Mikulay, of Murphysboro, Ill., Lisa Pace of Wood River, Ill., Debra Pace, of Wood River, Ill., Julie and her husband Bill Goodman, of Dorsey, Ill.; his 19 great grandchildren: Shea Lemos, of Gilroy, Ty Phillips, of Morgan Hill, Ryan and Jonathan Scarcella, of Gilroy, Brittany and Josephine Scarcella, of Hollister, Jack and Owen Smetek, of Springfield, Mathew, Thomas, Greg, Hannah, John and David Smetek, of Fredricksburg, Andrew, and Adam Mikulay of Murphyboro and Trevor, Emily and Amber Goodman, of Dorsey; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Scarcella was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, John and Santos; his sister, Anne Welch; and his parents, Natale and Angelina Scar-cella.
Mr. Scarcella was born Feb. 22, 1914, in Norwich, N.Y. He worked as a grocery clerk, owned his own bakery and Scarcella’s Diner in New York, until being drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1943. He served in the Italian Campaign until his discharge in 1945. After his discharge, he re-entered the restaurant business until he re-enlisted in 1950 and served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. After 20 years of active service, he was awarded the Bronze Star with one cluster. He later purchased and operated the Franco Hotel and Restaurant in Castroville and after retiring in 1976 moved to Gilroy where he has lived since that time. He loved to grow his own fruits and vegetables.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home.
