The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a “significant number” of DUI arrests made yesterday as a result of local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 13 deployments throughout the county.
The Avoid the 13 DUI crackdown campaign is meant to send a message that if you make a responsible choice to not drink and drive, you will avoid getting arrested by any of the 13 participating law enforcement agencies in the county, officials explain.
Between 12:01 a.m. Wednesday through midnight, officers representing 13 county law enforcement agencies arrested 22 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to a report from Sheriff’s Deputy Kurtis Stenderup.
Last year, 34 individuals were arrested during the same 48 hours, Stenderup says.
DUI arrest data collection will be continued through midnight Sunday. Additionally, California Highway Patrols throughout the state have all available officers patrolling freeways and county roads throughout the weekend as part of a Maximum Enforcement Period, according to the press release.
Today, extra DUI saturation patrols will be deployed in the cities and unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County. Police, Sheriff’s deputies and the CHP are encouraging all motorists to help make the community safer by calling 911 to report drunk drivers.
