Gilroy’s Jen Olvera was named NAIA Softball Pitcher of the Week after earning all four of Vanguard’s wins in four appearances last week.
Olvera, a junior at Vanguard University, started in the opening game of a two-game set with Azusa Pacific, going five innings and allowing only one hit with seven strikeouts and two walks in the run-rule shut-out of the Cougars. In game 2, Olvera came in for two innings of relief, striking out four in a pair of perfect innings to help Vanguard to a 13-4 win and a sweep of the GSAC doubleheader.
In its second twin bill of the week, Vanguard took on Hope International, as the Lions got a 1-0 win in the opener thanks in-part to seven innings pitched and 14 strikeouts from Olvera. The junior allowed two hits in the win.
Olvera also picked up the win in game 2, firing one inning of relief and carding two strikeouts in a 5-4 victory that pushed Olvera’s record to 4-0 on the week. Vanguard also finished the week 4-0 as a team.
Olvera’s final line in the four-game span included 15 innings pitched, three hits, a 0.00 ERA, no runs surrendered, 27 strikeouts and two walks. Olvera also had solid at bats in four games, driving in four runs and scoring four more, including the winning run in game 1 against Hope International.
TSS, Rugrats Win Titles
It’s Championship Week at Gilroy High School in the Indoor Soccer League.
TSS took the Gilroy Championship with its 6-3 win over the league’s highest-scoring team, FCP; and Rugrats captured the Mustang Championship with a 6-1 win over FC Chelsea.
TSS and Rugrats clash today and Thursday in the tournament championship games.
Green Sets Record
Three Gilroy middle schools competed in a track and field meet at Gilroy High last Thursday. Alison Green, from South Valley Middle school, broke the 1979 high jump record. Green jumped a 4-foot-10. The previous record was a 4-foot-9 held by Teresa Baker.
