The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the petty people who resort to name calling, sign slashing and snide innuendo when it comes to

politics. Whether it’s the local school board race or the presidential election, there are too many adults setting a lousy example. No wonder young people in America are turned off by politics. The

negativity and

unwarranted anger being exhibited by some bring the notion of overly critical soccer parents to mind. Let’s focus on ideas and respect for people who hold opposing viewpoints.

CHEERS: For Bill Hudson who is at the forefront of a parent group intent on giving GATE programs a boost within the Gilroy Unified School District. The approach by his OpenGATE group, rather than constant sniping, is refreshing. Hudson and company are seeking a way to supplement funding for the program and offer support. The Web site he’s put up, http://gilroyopengate.org, is nifty and provides a good avenue for communication. This effort will result in an increased focus on the GATE programs and a better education for our best and

brightest students.

JEERS: For the supervisors from Yolo and Sonoma counties who essentially gave this advice regarding the possibility of an Indian casino on the border of Santa Clara and San Benito counties just south of Gilroy: “If you don’t like it, too bad, it’s going to happen and you might as well make the best of it.” That’s hardly what we had in mind. Residents must be willing to contact their local representatives, especially Congressman Mike Honda, and express their opposition to this idea. Give his office a toll-free call at 1-888-643-4715.

CHEERS: For the Gilroy High School football team which battled proudly against rival Hollister last week. Despite the heartache of a questionable 7-6 loss, the comments from players to the media were all about the next game and what they needed to do to improve. That’s a character statement. GHS coaches and parents should be proud of this group.

CHEERS: For South County Housing, which celebrated its silver anniversary at Bonfante Gardens Wednesday night. The warmth of the stories fended off the chilly evening as people spoke about how the organization has helped so many afford a home here when that seemed an impossible dream. It’s an amazing tale, really, a cinderella story that involves thousand of homes in Gilroy. Homes built with sweat equity … homes priced below market rate … homes for single parents … South County Housing has built all those homes and turned many a dream into a daily reality.
