GILROY – City police are trying to find out who stabbed a 22-year-old Gilroy man in the back Sunday night, and why.

Police reportedly found the man lying in the street, bleeding and unconscious, at about 10 p.m. on the 8300 block of Forest Street. Paramedics treated the victim and determined he had been stabbed in the back by an unknown object.

A CalSTAR helicopter flew the victim to San Jose Medical Center. Medical staff initially listed him in critical condition, but he has since been upgraded, police said this morning. Barring complications, his wound was not as serious as medical staff initially feared, police Sgt. Kurt Ashley said.

Police ask anyone with information related to this assault to call Detective Daniel Zen at 846-0350.
