Tuesday’s match with Notre Dame started off well and good for the Gilroy High girls varsity volleyball team but spiraled downward from there.
A first-set victory gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead, however, the Spirits grabbed the next three sets to notch a four-set decision (23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-12) in a Tri-County Athletic League matchup in Salinas.
Gabby Flores recorded a team-high eight kills and Randi Groppe had five aces in the match.
The Mustangs (5-2 overall, 1-1 TCAL) host rival San Benito (6-8 overall, 0-2 TCAL) on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. or 22 minutes after the junior varsity match.
The Balers and Mustangs split the season series in 2009 with each team holding serve on its respective home court.
GHS TENNIS
An effort GHS girls tennis head coach Jami Reynolds said was one to be proud of didn’t translate into a win for the Mustangs as they dropped a Tri-County Athletic League match to Notre Dame 7-0 on Tuesday in Salinas.
“We lost all seven, but they played really well and I was very proud of all of them,” Reynolds said.
The closest match of the day was at No. 1-doubles. Gilroy’s Melanie Morelos and Elaina Vasquez went to a third-set tiebreaker against Megan Tuvera and Ashley Pippin. Morelos and Vasquez easily won the first set 6-1, but surrendered the second 6-4 and lost the tiebreaker 10-8.
The Mustangs continue TCAL play against San Benito on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.
