Dear Editor,

The recent open meeting to interview candidates for the vacancy in the school board can best described by the term “Tempest in a Teapot.”

A written question from the audience so shocked a candidate that he had to take a moment to compose himself before attempting to answer it. The question? “Being that Gilroy school students are over 60 percent Hispanic, shouldn’t that be reflected in the makeup of the school board?”

What the candidate really wanted to say was RACIST, INAPPROPRIATE. He felt that the school board should have either screened the questions and removed that one or at least apologized to him. For what?

Folks, are we so stifled by political correctness that we can’t even ask questions regarding race? The person that submitted the question felt it was a valid question. I think it was.

Consider; A large number of students have a problem learning English. It follows that the parents of these children do not speak English well if at all. What is more logical than having a well-qualified school board member that also speaks fluent Spanish so he can communicate with them without resorting to an interpreter?

That is not racist, it’s reality.
