The Gavilan Rams will be out to complete a winning season, and with a bit of luck, earn a bowl invitation tonight in a 7pm showdown with the San Jose City College Jaguars at Mustang Stadium.

A Gavilan win and a loss by one of several teams ahead of the Rams should be enough to earn a bowl berth for a team that boasts the state’s top-ranked defense as a postseason deal sweetener.

“We’ve been contacted,” Rams Coach John Lango said, adding that bowl committee representatives had asked about Gavilan’s availability for a game next Saturday. “We just need to go out and win. San Jose City’s a hungry team, very well-coached. They beat DeAnza two weeks ago, they have great receivers, are big up front and have three quarterbacks who each bring something different to the table.”

With a win, Gavilan would be 3-2 in the Coast Conference and 6-4 overall. Lango said he will go with the same starters as last week against Cabrillo. Gavilan fell 16-14 to the Seahawks last Saturday to lose any hope of a share of the conference title.

“We’ve had good practices this week,” the coach said. “We looked better than I had thought about our performance against Cabrillo after seeing the film.”

Sophomore Kyle Farnham will start at quarterback for the Jaguars. Aruelle Thompson is the leading receiver for San Jose City, while running back Coby Calhoun spearheads the visitors’ ground game.

If the Rams pull out the win, their postseason fate should be determined by Sunday afternoon. Gavilan has not played San Jose City since 1999, and has not defeated the Jags since 1978.
