GILROY – With a season under her belt and a roster that returns nine seniors in addition to some talented newcomers to the varsity level, Gilroy High girls tennis coach Jami Reynolds sees no reason why the Mustangs won’t improve on their 5-5 record from a year ago.
“I think this team can do better than last year just because we have some consistency,” Reynolds said Monday. “I know what to expect now. We’ll do better than last year.”
The first example of how the Mustangs will fare this season was certainly something to be pleased about. On Wednesday, Gilroy defeated Seaside’s top four singles players and a No. 1 doubles pairing in a match that morphed into a scrimmage. None of the five matches featured a Mustang opponent winning more than a game in any set.
Gilroy’s Meha Munshi will be one of the team’s leaders, as she assumed the No. 1 singles position after spending much of the summer taking lessons.
“I’m very thankful that her parents paid for lessons all summer,” Reynolds joked. “It just helped her tremendously.”
Other players who are expected to earn points for Gilroy in team matches include returning varsity player Emily Castro (No. 2 singles), and two players from last year’s junior varsity squad – Monica Liu (NO. 3 Singles) and Alyssa Castro (No. 4 singles).
“I’m looking forward to see how it all comes together,” Reynolds said.
The team’s next matches will take place Sept. 16 against North Salinas.
