“I was wondering what can be done about the parking at the Portuguese Hall. They don’t have sufficient parking for their area. I live about a block away from them, and there have been numerous times when I have come home and I can’t pull into the driveway because people are blocking it. Sometimes I have to park several blocks away. It’s hard when I’m carrying groceries. And the police don’t do anything about it.”
Red Phone: Dear More Parking Needed, Red Phone has received similar calls of parking in front of residences in the past, and the Gilroy Police Department has said it will respond as time permits if you call 846-0350.
The 250 Old Gilroy St. location has about 20 actual parking spots, so people have to end up parking along the street. The group doesn’t own any additional land, so it can’t add more parking, a board member said.
When Portuguese settlers founded the Gilroy society in 1901, no one could have imagined how popular their events would become. One of the most popular events each year is the Crab Cioppino Feed that is coming up March 19. The event is always a big hit.
If you attend the event, please be respectful of the neighbors and don’t block driveways.
Question on street cleaning
“It seems that the street sweeper misses the street between Country Drive and Azara Street. There are no houses along this stretch and the streets are really getting overgrown with weeds and junk.”
Red Phone: Dear Cleaning Needing, Red Phone forwarded your question to Recology, which contracts with the City of Gilroy to do street cleaning. Crews went out to that area to clean up the street, said Phil Couchee, Recology general manager. However they weren’t able to clean up the area where some bushes were growing out from the side of the street, he said. Hope that helps, good caller.
