“In many of its territories, Verizon has a fiber-optic phone/TV/internet service called FiOS. Verizon began rolling it out about 10 years ago, but Gilroy still does not have the service. Will Verizon ever offer FiOS in Gilroy or should the city start looking for a new provider, one that puts value in the 40,000 people who call Gilroy home.”

Red Phone: Dear Only The Best For Me, Verizon has no plans of expanding its service to Gilroy in the near future. The service is primarily available in Southern California and isn’t even available in the Bay Area, said spokesman Jonathan Davies.

“We’ve put fiber in the areas where we can reach the maximum number of customers,” he said. “In California, we’ve concentrated our efforts in the southern part of the state: i.e., Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Currently, we are concentrating on selling FiOS services in these areas and we are not increasing the fiber footprint significantly.”

Verizon recently upgraded its DSL High Speed Internet service in Gilroy and claims to offer speeds of 10-15 megabits per second. There are about 9,000 lines eligible in Gilroy for that service, he said.
