The following individuals and organizations deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For the news that a resurrected Renaissance Faire may return to Casa de Fruta. Play Faire Productions, made up of craftsmen, entertainers and an 18-member advisory board, is negotiating with Casa de Fruta to hold the faire on Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 18 to Oct. 24. Let’s raise a turkey leg and an ale in salute. Besides being fun, the faire is educational for students who visit for a taste of period history and it’s good for local businesses.
JEERS: For the proliferation of portable signs all over the city. It’s turning our streets into a veritable junkyard. In some places, like Church and Welburn for example, the signs advertising the businesses are right below the huge permanent sign which lists the establishments doing business in the shopping center. The rabbits are multiplying, and clearly it’s time for a change in the city’s policy.
CHEERS: For the Gilroy High baseball team which has clawed its way into second place with determination and gusto. It’s great to read about a team with a positive attitude.
CHEERS: For Gilroyan Ausencio Quezada, who won a seat at the World Series of Poker event in Las Vegas by winning a local tournament at the Garlic City Club championships. With the rise in popularity of poker, we might be seeing Quezada’s hand on TV with a big stack of chips in front of him in the near future. Good luck.
JEERS: For the drop in attendance within the Gilroy Unified School District. “One percent of attendance is $450,000,” according to Steve Brinkman, assistant superintendent of administrative services. Parents shouldn’t send their children to school when they are ill, but everyone should understand that whenever a child stays home, it hurts financially as well as educationally.
CHEERS: For the City Council which picked a design for the new arts center downtown. Now, let’s get it built and move the heart and soul of Gilroy forward.
