The Gilroy High boys soccer team snapped a three-game winless streak with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over Salinas on Friday night.
The Mustangs (5-8-1 overall, 2-3-1 Tri-County Athletic League) surrendered a pair of goals and before Jonathan Diaz De Leon made it 2-1 at halftime, and kick started four straight goals. Diaz De Leon tallied twice more and Andres Jimenez scored in the middle of those to lift GHS to victory. Javier Alejo (2), Raymundo Gonzalez and Efren Pineda were credited with the assists. Diaz De Leon has 15 goals this season.
• A tough season continued for the Christopher High boys varsity soccer team continued with a 2-0 home loss to Monterey on Friday in Gilroy.
Two quality chances literally bounced away as Angel Trejo and Ivan Reynoso hit the post and crossbar.
Injuries and ineligibility has caused the varsity and junior varsity soccer teams are now one squad, head coach Ricardo Espinosa said.
The Cougars are 0-7-1 in Monterey Bay League play.
• The Gilroy High boys basketball team held a slim fourth-quarter lead and were tied with Alvarez 50-50 late in the period. However, the Eagles (12-6 overall, 5-2 Tri-County Athletic League) outscored the Mustangs (6-12 overall, 1-6 TCAL) 4-0 over the final minute to win 54-50 on Friday night in Gilroy.
The Mustangs, paced by Christian Goldstein’s 10 points and nine each from Tommy Cox and Stefan Mercer, received scoring from nine different players. Alvarez’s Mitchell Wood led all scorers with 15 points.
The Christopher High boys basketball team dropped a 66-56 road tilt to Watsonville High on Friday night.
THURSDAY
• Three first-half goals proved plenty as the Christopher High girls varsity soccer team blanked visiting Seaside, 3-0, in a Monterey Bay League appointment Thursday.
Alondra Villanueva, Jasmine Contreras and Paulina Llamas tallied for the Cougars, who remain tied for first with Watsonville – the lone team to beat CHS in league.
“We are focusing on the fundamentals and playing the game the right way as we try to get ready for when we play North Monterey County and Watsonville again,” CHS head coach Janae Pimentel said.
North Monterey County is in third with a 4-2 league mark.
• For the fourth consecutive match, the Gilroy High girls varsity soccer team held an opponent scoreless. UNfortunately, for teh first time in league play the Mustangs were unable to register a goal in a 0-0 draw with Salinas on Thursday night.
The Mustangs (7-4-2 overall, 5-0-1 TCAL) remain in first place. Salinas (4-0-2 TCAL) is in second place.
• A 50-38 victory over Alvarez on Thursday night halted a five-game TCAL losing streak for the Gilroy High girls varsity basketball team.
Senior Ashlee Williams accounted for more than half of GHS’s offense with 27 points. Briana Barron and Athena Alarcon had eight points each.
