Dr. Zepure Kouyoumdjian, neurologist and medical director of the Stroke Program at Saint Louise Regional Hospital, will present an open forum titled “Memory Loss and When to Seek Help” from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 in the board room at the hospital, which is located at 9400 No Name Uno in Gilroy.
The presentation is free and open to the public. It will include information about the causes of memory loss, aging and its effect on memory loss, as well as understanding the differences between common memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
“People of all ages experience memory lapses from time to time. But as we age, worrying about misplacing our car keys or being unable to recall the name of our favorite restaurant can spiral out of control,” a press release from the hospital states. “Often these simple situations lead us to ask: Is my memory loss due to dementia or, more seriously, Alzheimer’s disease?”
To help avoid memory loss as time goes on, Dr. Kouyoumdjian recommends exercising both physically and mentally.Â
The forum will address memory loss as a treatable condition, and also explore its relationship to dementia. This is an umbrella term used to describe impairment of memory, reasoning, language and other skills, according to the press release.Â
“If you are experiencing memory problems on a regular basis, talk to your doctor for a timely diagnosis and then learn about appropriate care,” suggests Dr. Kouyoumdjian.Â
The lecture is part of Saint Louise’s free community health and wellness physician lecture series, “Talking Health,” which provides a platform for diverse, comprehensive and interactive health education. It is an opportunity for community members to meet other people with similar health conditions and interests to share and support one another. Each monthly seminar provides a forum to raise questions and become more aware of current health issues. For more information, please call (408) 848-4940.
