SALINAS – Salinas police are investigating a shooting after a mother was hit by gunfire Friday when someone fired at least four shots at the Northridge Mall.

Police said the mother, who was strolling with her children, was struck outside of Macy’s and suffered a superficial wound to one of her arms.

Tom Fielding, who was in the mall when the shots rang out, described a scene of chaos.

“Kids started screaming and mothers grabbed their babies,” Fielding said.

After the shooting, at least a half-dozen police cars, one fire engine and an ambulance responded.

Police cordoned off several mall exits to try to preserve potential evidence.
