Dear Red Phone,
“I thought Gilroy had a sign ordinance? The used car lot on First Street across from Bozzo’s 76 gas station has some very distracting and ugly banners [and] ‘decorations’ installed all the time. I could see it for a special sale, however they have them up permanently. Does nothing to enhance Gilroy’s image. Just my opinion!”
Dear eye on the aesthetics,
Code Enforcement Officer Hipolito Olmos for the City of Gilroy says he swung by the used car lot and took note of visible “signage violations,” as outlined in the City’s sign ordinance. The business was breaking several provisions listed below, according to Olmos, who says the following signs are “prohibited throughout the City of Gilroy” according to section 37.37 of the ordinance. This includes:
-Signs on or above the roof or projecting above the roof eave
-Flags, pennants, balloons, streamers and objects designed to move with the wind
-Any off-site advertising sign (signs on the fence across the alleyway)
-Signs with exposed bracing, guy wires or cables
-Business identification signs located on fences
“These are not all the violations at the site as I see other violations we will need to address,” Olmos said. “For example, the lack of onsite employee parking, customer parking and accessibility parking.”
The site is now “on my radar,” Olmos added.
