Gilroy – The Gilroy Library will be screening a film each of the remaining Saturdays in February in conjunction with more than 40 other events for Silicon Valley Reads 2007. Titled “American Dream Cinema: Ethnic Experiences on Film,” the films all touch on immigration, the American Dream and other themes of the Silicon Valley Reads 2007 book, “The Tortilla Curtain” by T.C. Boyle.
They continue this Saturday at 2pm with filmmaker John Carlos Frey, who will be at the library for a screening of his film “The Invisible Mexicans of Deer Canyon.” Frey lived and visited for more than a year amongst the hidden immigrants of San Diego’s Deer Canyon, near some of the most valuable real estate in the country. Some of the immigrants have lived without shelter, to hide their existence, for more than 20 years.
Silicon Valley Reads 2007 events at the Gilroy Library will wrap up Feb. 24, at 1pm, with a screening of Sundance Award Winner, “Picture Bride.”
The program is co-sponsored by the Gilroy chapter of the AAUW and the Gilroy Writing Project. Silicon Valley Reads asks everyone in the community to read the same book, at the same time and to discuss it with friends, family and co-workers. This year’s book is “The Tortilla Curtain.”
