Central Coast Section playoffs.
By virtue of Monterey defeating Seaside 12-6 on Thursday, the Christopher High softball team owns second place in the Monterey Bay League all to itself and will receive an automatic bid into the Central Coast Section playoffs.
CHS had a MBL bye Thursday while the rest of the teams finished out the league slate.
The Cougars (16-10-1), who finished the league season with four straight victories, held a one-game lead in the win column over the Spartans heading into Thursday’s regular season finale.
The Spartans (8-4 MBL) and Cougars split their season series. Had Seaside prevailed against first-place Toreadors (21-4, 12-0 MBL), it would’ve had the tiebreaker edge over the Cougars.
The Cougars’ late-season charge began with a triumph over North Monterey County and was highlighted by a comeback victory over the Spartans on May 3. CHS rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win 10-7, It then defeated Pajaro Valley and Watsonville to ensure themselves the best chance into the postseason. The softball team is the first team to qualify for the postseason in CHS history.
Seeding for the CCS playoffs will be decided Saturday.
The Cougars did play Thursday, hosting Los Gatos in a non-league encounter. The Wildcats (20-6-1) won 7-0.
