WATSONVILLE – Taking large strides to reaching varsity status in its first year of existence, the Christopher High junior varsity softball team, under the guides of manager Catherine Nohr, is currently 14-4 on the season and went a spotless 3-0 at its first varsity tournament last Saturday in Watsonville.

“They have been improving since day one,” Nohr said. “I challenged them from the beginning and told them they need to decide what team they want to be. They have stepped up and pulled together.”

The Lady Cougars steamrolled through their bracket, outscoring opponents 34-4 over the three games. CHS began the tournament with a 9-2 victory over St. Francis Central Coast Catholic, then muscled up for a 20-1 thrashing of Menlo-Atherton and wrapping up their stay with a comfortable 5-1 win over Sequoia.

“We wanted to see what they could do against some varsity competition,” CHS athletic director Darren Yafai said.

The Lady Cougars held their own, and then some.

They did an incredible job,” Nohr said. “They have that motivation.”
