The following individuals and organizations deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For the approach South County Housing and Urban Design Associates are taking on the proposed 12-acre project that would turn the defunct Gilroy Cannery into a mixed-use project of housing and office space. Holding open meetings to gain community input and having a project design team work openly and actively in Gilroy make for an enlightened approach to a project. Go down to The Strand on Monterey Street and take a look at the drawings. The project, which could hold as many as 200 units, could be the springboard for downtown revitalization that Gilroy needs. Let’s keep the momentum and meticulous planning moving forward.
JEERS: For the city which hasn’t increased the number of tennis courts available to the public. There are 300 people in the local tennis clubs and five courts at Las Animas Veterans Park. That’s not nearly enough. We’ve got the players, the weather for evening play but not the facilities. … Is there a tennis court for the public in that $27.7 million police station bid?
JEERS: For the Morgan Hill City council which just let the public know that, oh, by the way, the bill for the city’s investigation into finding out who was investigating the city manager doubled to more than $100,000. That’s a crime. So is making the decision to spend that amount of taxpayer money behind closed doors. The lesson here: When the motives are clearly rotten, the results will be, too.
CHEERS: For former standout Gilroy High School pitcher Sarah Caudle who landed a very plum job as varsity softball coach at Mitty High School, a perennial powerhouse in women’s sports. Caudle’s work ethic and burning desire to win will serve the Monarchs well. That’s one Gilroy let get away.
CHEERS: For the Great Garlic
Cook-off winner Ginger Moreno. It’s fabulous to have someone so genuinely thrilled to win the contest. And her garlic seafood soup recipe looks delicious.
CHEERS: For the volunteers stoking the flames of literacy by reading to children enrolled in the Gilroy Summer Playground Program. How cool is the idea to incorporate an educational feature into a fun summer program? The city should win an award for this, and the school district should present coordinator Geralyn Fortino with a certificate of appreciation. To volunteer, contact Fortino at 846-0460.
CHEERS: For the news that the Gilroy Unified School District may sell the old San Ysidro School site to Anchorpoint Christian High School. If the private school can accept the location off the busy stretch of highway, the deal would serve the community well. GUSD could use the cash, and it’s land that will never again be used for public education.
CHEERS: For Gilroy Police who managed to nab an insane and dangerous driver after a high-speed chase through city streets Wednesday. Mario Lopez sped around Gilroy at speeds of 65 mph. GPD methodically tracked him down and arrested him.
