Volunteers make it happen at Bike To Wherever Day, which took place in Gilroy and beyond last month. Photo: Curt Hentschke

Before we start, a HUGE shout out to all of the fine folks who volunteered at those Bay Area Bike to Wherever energizer stations and bicycle events last month. Your time and talents made it another wonderful happening for cyclists everywhere!
Onto June, which means we’re halfway through my last year with you; please contact me (he*********@***il.com) if you have any last requests before I sign off permanently at the end of 2025. I’d feel terrible if I left any of my loyal readers hanging, saying, “He never told us about _________.”

I don’t know about you, but I always feel a tad let down as we enter the sixth month. Oh, I’m thrilled for Father’s Day, my birthday and summer vacation; but bicycle-wise, it’s another story.

Perhaps it’s because June follows May, aka National Bike Month, and its 31 days teeming with bicycle events. I think it’s also because now is when I tend to recall all the amazing June bike events that have come and gone, often the victims of rising production costs.

Ask any longtime area cyclist, and they’ll wax nostalgic about June favorites like the Earthquake Country Ride and the Tour de Garlique! Gone, but not forgotten.

But enough with the depressing dissertation! Thankfully, June has always been a time for warmer rides. Until the summer solstice shows up, the days continue to grow longer, perfect for those pleasant evening rides.

Oh, and DO be sure to take Dad or Grandpa out for a Father’s Day ride. We love things like that.
