Gilroy – For the second day in a row, Gilroy held its opponent to single digits in a quarter.

After limiting Lincoln to just one point in the fourth quarter in a 61-36 victory late Monday, Gilroy held Valley Christian to five points – a season low for the San Jose team – during a 62-46 loss Tuesday.

Valley Christian (5-2) used a full-court defensive press to defeat Gilroy. The Mustangs (8-6) handled the pressure well to start the game, but the Warriors’ speed and athleticism eventually started to wear Gilroy down.

“They had tough pressure,” said guard Adam Supnet. “We got a little flustrated and let our emotions take over. We knew we had a chance against them if we came out and executed. They just outplayed us.”

Senior Calvin Kretz, who led all scorers with 16 points, had 10 of the Mustangs’ first 15 points.

“He’s a real smart player,” GHS head coach Bud Ogden said of Kretz. “He plays really courageous. He is a good influence among the players, and I hope it spreads more.”

Although the Mustangs were often chasing spreads of 20 or more points, they contested everything for the duration of the game.

“They have a good group of guys and played tough the whole game,” said Valley Christian coach Steve Cotton. “That’s why we schedule them.”

At halftime, the Mustangs were down 40-22. After an 8-5 run in the the third quarter, Gilroy got within 15 to bring the score to 45-30.

“My goal going into that quarter was to cut the lead in half,” Ogden said. “(The Warriors) are a great team, and to hold them like that hopefully is a sign of good things to come.”

The Mustangs held Valley Christian scoreless for nearly three minutes in the the third quarter with their aggressive play. Dominic Wilkins had a nice steal and passed ahead to Vinny DeLorenzo to start a successful fast break in the quarter.

“We just played bad all around,” Cotton said.

“We made bad decisions, and we didn’t have a sense of urgency.”

But it was all Warriors from there even though Gilroy had some success running its high picks late in the game.

“We always let our defense carry our offense,” said Cotton. “Tonight was no different. We don’t have the best half-court game, so we have to play that way.”

Gilroy’s subs came up with some nice baskets late in the game to keep the score within 20 points.

Next up for the Mustangs is the Soquel Winter Classic Thursday.

JVs take out Warriors

Meanwhile, the Gilroy JV team (9-3) defeated visiting Valley Christian 56-36 earlier Tuesday. Christian Cania had a superlative game, scoring 16 points with hardly a miss from the field or the stripe.

“I think he only missed one shot all night, and he was four-for-four from the line,” said coach Jay Baksa.

Chris Yates and Destry Jones both had eight points for the Mustangs, while Jason Conrad and Robert Mercado chipped in six points apiece.
