Red Phone

On Chestnut Street in Gilroy I saw a shopping cart and I was going to pick it up and return it. But then I saw seven more. Who’s responsible? I’m sure it’s not the city, so is it the stores themselves? If so, they don’t seem to care.
Red Phone:
Red phone delved into your concern for abandoned carts and found that the City of Gilroy is doing its job. However, the City needs concerned citizens like you, good caller, to take the next step.
The City of Gilroy passed the Shopping Cart Management, Removal, Impoundment, Retrieval and Disposal Ordinance in 2007 to decrease the number of abandoned carts on streets and in parks. It requires all shop owners who have carts to register them with the City and be responsible for their return if taken from their premise and abandoned. If you find an abandoned shopping cart, typically you can identify who it belongs to, and you can call the owner so they may pick it up. For example, Nob Hill Foods will contact its shopping cart retrieval company to pick up the cart.
People may also call City Hall.
“Call (408) 846-0444, and anyone answering the phone will make arrangements to have the shopping cart picked up or will call the owner to retrieve the cart,” according to Theresa Hernandez of the Recreation Department.
