Each month, the principals of Gilroy and Christopher high schools choose a total of four students (two from GHS and two from CHS) to spotlight. GHS senior Andrew Hathaway, 17, is this week’s Student of the Week.
What inspires you? I look up to a lot of the musicians that I have gotten to know personally over the past few years. They have experience beyond my years, and they constantly push me to be both a better musician and a better leader.
What is your favorite subject in school? I’m definitely a math/science oriented person. I like Calculus and Physics because they make a lot more sense to me than English and History classes. Plus, I think they’re both a lot more interesting. I can’t forget choir, though. I always look forward to making music in the morning.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world, what would it be? I would love to see what life would be like without people being so constantly absorbed in technology. I feel like social networking and portable electronics are driving people apart, and I think life would be a lot more meaningful if people would just stick to talking face to face.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go? I would love to go to Japan. I’ve always been fascinated with Japanese culture and language, and I feel like Japan would be a nice place to visit. I also think it would be awesome to go to the moon.
Name one big challenge in your life right now: My biggest challenge right now is getting through senior year. I know what college I’m going to attend next year, and I finished most of my scholarship applications. The only thing left is to finish out this year and not burn myself out.
My dream job: My dream job is to find something that combines my love of science with my love of music. I’m not sure exactly what that would be at this point in time.
If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things could you not live without? First would be my drumset. I would definitely need some sort of musical outlet. Second would be a sort of infinite music library, where I could listen to any song or piece of music I wanted. Third, I would love a kitchen, so I could teach myself how to cook. Because let’s face it, I’m screwed when I go off to college and I don’t have my parents to cook dinner.
Favorite book: “Brave New World.” We read it in my English class not too long ago, and I thought it was fascinating. I’m not entirely sure why I liked it so much, but something about it grabbed my attention and kept me absorbed in the book the whole time.
What do you want to do after high school? Next year, I’m going to Cal Poly SLO. I’ve always loved San Luis Obispo, since we used to travel there a lot when I was a little kid. It’s clean, it’s just the right size, it’s right up against the hills, and it’s close to the beach. Sounds like my kind of town.
Something that makes me smile: Making other people smile. I think the best way to make my day is for me to make someone else’s day.
