Seniors Martin, Gravell OK after collision in 15-6, 15-7, 15-10
victory over Monterey on road
MONTEREY – Although Monterey did not pose much of a threat to the Gilroy High boys volleyball team in Wednesday’s three-game road sweep, the Mustang spikers did receive a scare when seniors Scott Martin and Josh Gravell tangled legs and both went down.
Martin – one of Gilroy’s top kill leaders – had to leave the game with a rolled ankle, but he did return to action. Gravell – one of the Mustangs’ top blockers – shook off his injury and stayed in the game.
Gilroy kept its dominant form – winning three straight by scores of 15-6, 15-7, 15-10 over the Toreadors.
Senior hitter Jason Medenceles recorded a team-high 10 kills, while Martin finished up with six kills.
Senior setter Matt Largo tallied a team-high 16 kills, while senior teammate Tucker Baksa had eight set-ups for the Mustangs.
Gilroy’s latest triumph lifted its Tri-County Athletic League record to 10-1 and its overall mark to 18-8.
“We were on,” said co-head coach Craig Martin of his spikers. “We were on hitting and we did a good job with our blocking. Our serving was really good as well.”
Up next, the Mustangs will play host Friday to Seaside at 6 p.m. in the Gilroy High gymnasium.
