GILROY – The Lady Mustang tennis team returned to its league-best form Tuesday by sweeping North Salinas in seven bouts for the second time this season.
“They were ready to play today,” head coach Jennifer Yoder said. “They’re looking forward to playing Live Oak and then the T-CALs.”
The Gilroy girls are tied with Notre Dame for the league’s best record at 8-1 with only Thursday’s road match against the rival Lady Acorns remaining at 3:30 p.m. Both teams have one match left and are on target to share the T-CAL title after splitting the season series.
“We match up pretty well against Live Oak. They were pretty strong at their No. 1 and No. 2 singles and their No. 1 doubles. They gave our girls a lot of trouble.”
The Lady Mustangs came away with a 6-1 victory in their first encounter and now face Live Oak on their home courts.
In Tuesday’s win over North Salinas, senior No. 1 Catherine Wilson was tested as she battled into a third set. Since they were running out of daylight, the two players agreed to play just a tie-breaker in the third set to determine the match. Wilson won the tie-breaker by a 10-8 margin after dropping the first set 3-6 and winning the second set 6-2.
“The girls decided just to hang it all out because of daylight savings time. It was getting dark,” Yoder said. “Catherine had to play a defensive player so it was hard for her to close out points. It’s frustrating, but then she started playing her game and got the result she wanted.”
“That girl just ran every ball down.”
Senior No. 2 Valerie Huang (6-1, 6-2), senior No. 3 Mindy Marquez (6-0, 6-0) and senior No. 4 Megan Leuchars (6-1, 6-2) all won their bouts in straight sets.
In doubles action, the top duo of Amy Thomas and Alicia Shurley (6-2, 6-1), the No. 2 unit of Jackie Morales and Anna Nguyen (6-2, 6-3), and the No. 3 tandem of Tricia Pruss and Katie Blomquist (6-1, 6-3) all won in straight sets as well.
