Los Gatos – At the CCS Top 8 Meet at Los Gatos on Friday, Mother Nature took mercy on no one.
Particularly, it was the wind she sent to wreak havoc on the section’s best in track.
In his warm–ups for discus, Gilroy’s Robert Best was feeling pretty good. The wind was blowing in his favor and his throws were getting into the 160’s. But then the wind changed, right before the real competition was going to start.
“Everybody went back down to reality,” said Gilroy throwing coach Richard Macy.
Still, Best mustered a third–place finish, his best throw traveling 152–02 feet.
“My warm–ups were 10 feet further,” Best said.
“But it was OK into the wind.”
Best was less than pleased with his sixth–place shot put performance, during which he scratched on two of his furthest throws.
“The scratches were a mere lack of balance,” Best said. “The last one was close to 51 and what made it really bad is that it was one of those where I felt like I might have been able to keep it in.”
He’s just happy it wasn’t the CCS meet.
“If it was, I would go home and cry,” Best said.
Macy wasn’t too worried about the performance from Best, who had PR’d in the shot put the day before against Palma.
“He looked like he was getting too far ahead and trying to muscle it,” Macy said. “(His upper body) was too anxious to get ahead of his lower body.”
On the girls’ side, discus alternate Sierra Barozza did get to compete and took seventh with a throw of 105–07 feet.
“I was pretty happy, considering it was freezing cold and windy,” Barozza said.
The only other ‘Stangs competitor was high–jumper Frank Valadez, who failed to clear the starting height of 6 feet. His best jump this year is 6–02 feet.
