Three young men robbed a taxi driver with a weapon, taking an unknown amount of money, police said.

About 10:18 p.m. Friday, the three youths were picked up by the taxi driver near Ronan Avenue and Church Street, police said. The driver took the men to the 600 block of West Eighth Street, near Glen View Elementary School in southwest Gilroy.

There, one of the young men, still in the taxi, took an unknown type of “stabbing instrument” and threatened the driver, demanding money, police said. Another of the men put his hand on his front waistband – a possible sign that he was carrying a weapon – and also demanded money. The men then took an unknown amount of cash.

All three men then ran from the taxi, police said. No weapons were recovered, and the taxi driver did not suffer any injuries.

All three young men were described as being Hispanic, 17 or 18 years old, 5 feet, 5 inches to 5 feet, 6 inches, and with thin builds, police said. All three were wearing black clothing.

The male with the stabbing instrument had short black hair and spoke English and Spanish, police said. The male who made the threatening gesture was also spoke English and Spanish. The third young male had short black hair.

It is likely they are all local residents, Sgt. Wes Stanford said.

“Typically people don’t come to another city to rob a taxi driver,” he said.
