Two Gilroy tried-and-true favorites celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Saturday with a soiree in the barrel room at Solis Winery and some after fun at Westside Grill. Hearty congratulations to Sal and Annie Tomasello, two really nice people who have made a difference in this community for quite a long time. It’s funny, but even their names seem like they were made for one another – Sal and Annie. Cheers and here’s to another good time on your 50th.

Not her 50th drink invention, but “T” aka Teresa Glover, bartender extraordinnaire at Westside, has come up with the Delicious Bubbleicious. Ordering a bubble gum martini is indeed a bit weird, but I have to admit the shot-glass sample “T” poured tasted quite refreshing. What’s in it: bubbble gum vodka by 3 Olives; X-rated liqueur and 7-up … order one up for your date and ask for some of those delicious tempura green beans as an appetizer.

“D” could be for date or the hoot of an answer I got back lickety split when I sent out the Question of the Week to the Community Pulse Board: D for “Dysfunctional” was the answer back asking for a letter grade for the City Council … yep, right on the money.

Not sure what’s more dysfunctional, the City Council or the recall against MayorAl – or perhaps, Monsieur Zappa, we should call it the Failure to Launch Recall … anyway the recall Web site is up and there’s a place only those with sardonic tendencies can appreciate, a place for the “Friends of MayorAl.” Wonder if the IP addresses of those who leave a comment will be captured and turned over to the police department for further review?

Review #1: It’s early, but the demeanor of Marco Sanchez, the new principal at Gilroy High, in talking to registering students is a very positive sign for a new day at GHS.

Review #2: Twins Jenny and Susan Huang have opened Gilroy’s second sushi restaurant on 10th Street in the center where Rite Aid is. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and the Santa Cruz roll is to die for – but you can’t get it fresh off the boat just yet. All the sushi boats at Pearl Sushi Lovers are in dry dock along the wall awaiting the final governmental OK. Once the lagoon is full, customers at the sushi bar will be able to pluck the goods fresh off the boats. Way cool for kids, too. The logo is as sharp as the decor and I’m happily amazed since I never thought I’d see the day when Gilroy featured two top-notch sushi bars.

In the sushi saddle near me, sat down Gilroy’s tribute to game-show stardom, Joe Trela, big game winner on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” a few years back. Joe flew to the Big Apple recently courtesy of ABC, for the Who Wants to be a Millionaire special 10th anniversary edition. In the blogger’s discussion of the historical, one dropzone5 wrote: “I think Joe Trela’s million-dollar win is one of my favorites. Aside from it being the first jackpot win I saw, the fact that he ran the rest of the ladder from $32K without any lifelines is a huge accomplishment. And he did it so coolly (or at least appeared to do it that way).” Cool Joe from hot Gilroy town … and the million-dollar question he answered: Which insect shorted out an early supercomputer and inspired the term “computer bug”? Choices for a cool million bucks were: A. Moth, B. Roach, C. Fly and D. Japanese Beetle … Joe, got it right, A …

It’s all going great guns for garlic mogul and birthday boy, Don Christopher, who has turned a spry 75. What a year for The Don! Christopher High School, which might be the nicest high school in the state, opens and garlic for the Christopher Ranch operation is back in the Gilroy ground after decades of absence. Now, what on earth would you get Don for his birthday? Haven’t a clue …

Clueless is what the public employee unions are about regarding the cost of benefits … $100,000-a-year retirements at 55 won’t – can’t – continue. The pervasive attitude of “I’m going to get mine,” is going to backfire and hurt so many of those who could have had a nice, tidy retirement and a good life were it not for their own greed.

Greedy about keeping a quiet street quiet is understandable. But I just don’t get some of the things the Council apparently directs city staff to do … Never understood why there’s a traffic-island barrier preventing entrance to Princevalle at Sixth Street. It’s really not that close to the high school, but it’s there and according to a survey of residents done by the city … surprise, they want it to stay. Only four of 55 residents, according to the city, want it removed. And we needed to waste city staff time doing a mail survey to determine that? C’mon folks, could the results be any more obvious? Don’t think so.

Think it would be a good idea to attend the Gold Coast Casino Nite to benefit Gilroy’s Rebekah Children’s Services. It’s Friday, Aug. 29 at Fortino Winery – dinner, playing chips, entertainment, dessert and even a side game of Texas Hold ‘Em if you reserve early – all for a good cause. It’s $65 and there’s more info at 846-2470.
