Gilroy's Forrest Alvarez tries to block a pass by Alisal's

Gilroy’s girls edged Alisal 3-2 Friday to stay flawless in
league, while the GHS boys fell hard at home Thursday to lose
3-0.
Two Gilroy High soccer teams took on the Alisal Trojans last week. Only one was able to walk away the victors.

The GHS varsity girls topped Alisal 3-2 on Friday, while the boys were handed a 3-0 defeat by the Trojans on Thursday.

Ariana Carrillo scored her team-high eighth goal of the season to start the scoring for the Lady Mustangs.

“We started the season by putting [Carrillo] at wing, and she’s never played wing before,” Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez said. “The last few games we’ve shifted her back at forward. We’re a little deeper at wing (now), and she’s a very good match with (fellow forward Ariana) Vera.”

Vera is second on the Mustangs with seven goals on the season, and had an assist in the game to give her four on the year.

Katelyn Nebesnick also had an assist for GHS, while freshmen Savannah Silacci and Monique Barragan both netted shots. It was the first career goal for Barragan.

“The main thing with Barragan, she’s one of the first true defensive center [midfielders] that I’ve had,” Hernandez said. “She won’t get a lot of goals, but she will pressure and set a tone in the midfield.”

Ahead 2-1 at halftime and 3-1 until late in the game, Gilroy ended up surrendering its first two goals of league play this season, which could be a concern.

“They were the only team to score on us last year (in league),” Hernandez said about the Trojans. “It’s that part of the season right now. The inexperience that I warned about – we’re a young team. Some of these things are starting to catch up with us, but we have to work through him.”

At 5-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League, Gilroy’s girls now have a commanding hold on the top spot of the standings. The next closet team is San Benito (11-1-3 overall, 3-0-2 TCAL), which will be coming to Garcia-Elder Sports Complex in Gilroy for a 5 p.m. contest on Wednesday.

“Like always, they have strong, fast forwards, (and), from what I understand, a solid defense,” Hernandez said.

Gilroy’s boys didn’t fare nearly as well in their matchup against Alisal, falling behind 2-0 at the half only to see the deficit increase to three by the time the final whistle blew.

Rigoberto Ramirez didn’t make matters any easier for the Mustangs, stopping five shots in goal.

Gilroy now finds itself in the middle of the TCAL pack at 2-1-1 in league, 8-3-5 overall. The team will try to regroup today at 3:30 p.m. in Hollister when it faces San Benito (4-7-1, 1-3-1).
